This is a 40 day prayer journey thematically centered upon belief and faith in our God. The prayer requests are designed to focus on Overflow: ONE and the ministry of the gospel in Ontario. Try to pray the entire 40 days starting on Wednesday, April 9, 2008. It will lead up to the Sunday of Overflow. If you miss a day, don't worry but just pick up where you need to be and keep going. This is a guide – the important thing is that you remember to call out to God on behalf of Overflow and Ontario.
Prayer: Express your hope in Jesus for Overflow to the Lord by prayer.
1. The Word: Psalm 29
Believe it: Our God is glorious and worthy of praise. This psalm speaks of the paradox of our Lord. His glory is beyond our best attempts of understanding and his voice is powerful in effect, yet he still blesses his people. Inasmuch as we are small and weak, the Lord is near and strong on our behalf.
Prayer: Give God praise because of his glory, even though we might not fully understand. Remember that he is still near even though he is glorious.
2. The Word: Exodus 19; 1 Peter 1:13-16
Believe it: Our God is holy. Nothing about the Lord is impure or common. And as such, nothing about his people should be impure or unholy. Of course we are still human and make mistakes, but God has called us to be his holy people.
Prayer: Have a look at your life. Take time today to seek God in his holiness, and ask him to change you into a holy person.
3. The Word: Isaiah 1:16-20
Believe it: God cares for people. And for those who will pray for others, he wishes them to be people who are not only going to pray but also get involved showing God's love. In this passage, the prophet is encouraging the people to stop sinning and to learn to do what it right.
Prayer: Ask God to prepare you to be used by him. Ask him to teach you to do what is right.
4. The Word: John 4:1-42
Believe it: Worshipers of God will worship in Spirit and truth. They will know the Holy Spirit and believe the truth of Jesus Christ as Messiah. True worshipers will not only seek out the Lord, but will actually be sought out by God (v.23).
Prayer: Take a few moments for personal worship. Like the Samaritan woman, express your belief in Jesus.
5. The Word: 2 Chronicles 16:1-9
Believe it: When we depend on the Lord, he will act for our good. When we depend on ourselves, we don't get very far in accomplishing the Lord's will. This passage tells how the Lord's eyes look throughout the whole earth just to see who is fully committed to the Lord, so that he can strengthen that person.
Prayer: Commit your full heart to the Lord today and just see what he will do with you.
6. The Word: Daniel 1; 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
Believe it: Daniel resolved himself not to defile himself with foreign food. While many others may have fell into eating this foreign food, Daniel and his friends stood apart. If we walk with Christ, he will teach us to walk differently, and will bless with his gifts accordingly.
Prayer: Resolve to abstain from sin, and commit to walk in the Lord's way.
7. The Word: Job 19:23-27
Believe it: Job knew that the Lord would one day stand on the earth. It is that day that is the hope of all Christians, when Jesus stands as Saviour and Lord. This is the day that we eagerly await and anticipate.
Prayer: Express your hope in Jesus for Overflow to the Lord by prayer.
8. The Word: 1 John 2:15-27
Believe it: Believers are anointed by God. They are filled with the Holy Spirit who is the anointing of God. Because of that, we are able to determine truth from falsehood and right from wrong. It is God's power in us to stand strong for him.
Prayer: Pray for the discernment to obey God, and ask him to endow you with the power of the Holy Spirit both for now and at Overflow.
9. The Word: Ezekiel 36: 24-32
Believe it: Referring to the people of Israel, this text promises a time when God would give his people a heart of flesh replacing ones of stone. But this is also what the Lord does in Christians; taking away the old heart of stone and giving a more impressionable heart of flesh. The work of the Holy Spirit moves us to obey the Lord.
Prayer: Pray for personal openness to the Holy Spirit. Ask him to make your impressionable to his will.
10. The Word: Micah 6:1-8
Believe it: The call of God is to act right, love mercy, and walk humbly with God. Loving mercy requires the love of God to in our hearts. Mother Teresa is one who exemplifies this idea. She once said, "God has created us for great things: to love and offer love, to experience tenderness toward others, as He did, and to know how to offer Jesus to others. People are not hungry for us; they are hungry for God."
Prayer: Ask God to make your life one that makes others hungry for God.
11. The Word: 2 Chronicles 7
Believe it: The Lord is interested in hearts which turn back to him. He is interested in people turning from where they are and facing him. Notice in verse 14 that it is God's people that identified as the ones who ought to pray, and seek him.
Prayer: Ask the Lord to turn the churches in Ontario back to him, so that he might take notice of us and heal our land.
12. The Word: Jeremiah 29:1-7
Believe it: Just as the exiles that Jeremiah was writing to, believers in Christ are not at home but away from home. But there is still a responsibility to act as God's children where we are before the Lord comes. And Jeremiah's words are appropriate for us who are living out our Christian lives while we await the Lord's coming.
Prayer: Pray for your province that the Lord would bless it, and believe that God is building his Church even in every community in this province.
13. The Word: Luke 19:41-44; Psalm 122
Believe it: Jesus prayed for the city of Jerusalem, and even wept over the predicament and hardness of the city. He took a stake in the place which was dearest to his heart. We too, need to take a stake in the communities that we live in. It is time to align ourselves again with the gospel priority and pray for our communities, weeping and fasting for God's healing.
Prayer: Pray for your community.
14. The Word: Habakkuk 3:1-2
Believe it: This is the prayer of a history maker. This is the prayer of one who desires to see change "in our day." The people of our province will not recognize the greatness of our God, until we do.
Prayer: Pray the prayer of Habakkuk.
15. The Word: Ephesians 3:14-21
Believe it: If you wish to strive for unity in the body of Christ, begin on your knees before God. Praying for those who you are struggling to get along with is the beginning of healing. Paul knelt down before God to remember the Ephesians and prayed that they might be complete in the ministry that they do.
Prayer: Remember another church in your community (from another denomination), and pray for their ministry.
16. The Word: Philemon 4-7
Believe it: Paul prayed for the Philemon that he might be "active in sharing his faith." This letter is a call to Philemon to show the love of Christ by his actions. Sharing his faith is a lifestyle of witnessing that we are living in the power of Christ's resurrection.
Prayer: In a few moments, ask the Lord to show you how you might be active in sharing the faith. Commit your obedience to his will.
17. The Word: Exodus 17:8-15
Believe it: Pastors of the church cannot do the ministry by themselves. Just as Moses had Aaron and Hur to lift up his hands when he got tired, so ministers of the Church need helpers to lift them up when they are weak. We need to pray on behalf of our ministers and their families that they might keep strong and remain focused on Christ for their strength.
Prayer: Lift up your pastors before the Lord.
18. The Word: 1 Peter 4:1-2
Believe it: Peter zoned in on the fact that we must live our lives for the will of God. It is how we follow the example the Christ has left us. Therefore, pray for your youth group. Whatever you accomplish is not as important as the fact that you are doing the will of God. He responds to obedience and that is why we pray "let your will be done on earth as it is on heaven."
Prayer: Pray that your youth group will obey the will of God. Seek what the Holy Spirit desires to accomplish in your community through you.
19. The Word: Proverbs 15
Believe it: The proverbs are wonderfully short and powerful verses. The Lord speaks through these phrases to ensure that his people are filled with his wisdom. That's it for today.
Prayer: Stop speaking for a few moments and listen. Read and listen. Then read some more and listen. Allow the proverbs to dwell in your heart.
20. The Word: Philippians 4:4-7
Believe it: I love the phrase "the Lord is near." He is present at all of our functions, services, outreaches, meetings, meals and family times. He is present when we are alone. That is why we rejoice and bring all of our requests to him in faith.
Prayer: Pray for the needs in your family, among your friends, in your church, and your community.
21. The Word: 1 Samuel 12:18-25: Matthew 5:13-16
Believe it: Samuel cuts to the matter with the people. Even though there was sin in their lives, it was important to not turn away from God but rather from their sin. Samuel commits to pray for them and teach them the way that is right. Jesus taught that Christians are salt and light and that others may see what he is like by observing us.
Prayer: Examine your life and confess your sins. Pray for your friends that they might see the Father in you.
22. The Word: Ephesians 3:17-19
Believe it: God is raising up young people to pray for their schools, colleges, and universities. See You At The Pole is a worldwide movement of prayer. Students are leading prayer meetings calling out for God to change our hearts, and the students who do not yet know him.
Prayer: Join the millions in calling upon God to move your nation and the world.
23. The Word: Joshua 1:1-8
Believe it: The Lord is still calling "Joshua's" to go and spread the gospel to areas where it has not been spread. By faith people minister in the midst of conditions which most of us would not find satisfactory. But they minister the gospel to people who have not yet heard. Pray that God would call some at Overflow to a global focus of missions work.
Prayer: Pray for a missionary that your church supports. If your church does not support one, pray for missionaries to be raised up from your church.
24: The Word: Nehemiah 1
Believe it: The walls of Jerusalem were broken and this was the cause of great distress to Nehemiah. But he went beyond weeping and praying to acting upon the impulse of the Lord to rebuild that which was lost. The condition of the city compelled him to action. Canada is a great country, but it is a country which is in need of a Saviour. Ontario has much to offer in rebuilding the Church in our nation.
Prayer: Ask the Lord to compel the churches in our province to action for the sake of Christ. Pray that we will move beyond emotions to impact in new ways our province and country.
25. The Word: Romans 13:1-7
Believe it: Paul says that we ought to give to all that we owe, and respect those in authority over us. We are children of God and ought to pray for all those who are in charge of some aspect of our welfare because we know we are ultimately accountable to God, as are they.
Prayer: Pray for your teachers, mayor, premier, and prime minister. Also pray for your parents.
26. The Word: Joel 2:12-17
Believe it: The Lord delights in his people turning towards him and praying. When we pray, we call on the Lord to move in ways that we cannot. He loves to be able to forgive and be compassionate to people. Overflow will be a place where people will receive his compassion. Let's respond to his call to pray "Spare your people."
Prayer: Take some time with a friend or friends to pray together for Overflow. Only 12 more days to go!
27. The Word: Zechariah 4; John 8:21-30 Believe it: It is the by the Spirit of the Lord which the Church will go forward. It is Christ who changes hearts and draws people to himself and we need to be a people who will seek the Holy Spirit and follow the Spirit's leading.
Prayer: Seek the Lord for the power of the Holy Spirit for transforming lives and witnessing.
28. The Word: Psalm 25
Believe it: Verse 14 says that the Lord confides in those who fear him. Vision is born where the Lord speaks to and shows people his ways and his truth. The Lord is raising up people that he will confide all over the world including Ontario and Canada.
Prayer: Take some time to listen to the Lord. See what he might be saying to you.
29. The Word: Genesis 1-2:3; Psalm 24 Believe it: The earth is the Lord's. After all he created it and us. We are his creation and he has made us in his image. All of the wonderful sights and sounds of nature were created by our Lord. Nothing that happens, does so without him being aware of it. He is involved in our lives.
Prayer: God created all of us. Pick a country and pray that these people might realize that the Lord is the true God, and Christ the only Saviour.
30. The Word: Revelation 5:6-14
Believe it: The Lamb is our centre. Christ is the one whom we love, and more than that is the one who loved us so much that he gave his own life for us. We are on a mission because we love him. Loving God; loving others. That is the Christian mandate.
Prayer: Pray that the Church in Canada will pick up the mission and serve the global Church reaching out to the nations within Canada and outside.
31. The Word: Romans 10: 6-15
Believe it: The Scriptures tell us that it is by believing in our heart and telling others of our faith that our salvation is confirmed (v.9). The Scripture also affirms for us that no one who believes in Christ will ever be disappointed ... This passage also points out how welcome are those who come preaching God's Good News! For how will people believe if they have not heard about Jesus.
Prayer: Pray for all the speakers/musicians who will be proclaiming God's good news at Overflow. Ask God to bless them, anoint them, encourage them, and use them to make His message clear and plain.
32. The Word: Acts 11: 1-18, John 3:16
Believe it: These scripture verses remind us that the Gospel of Jesus Christ has no cultural or religious boundaries ... "whosoever will" BELIEVE may be saved. Even in the Christian church today, we sometimes are tempted to hide behind our denominational boundaries at the expense of God's work. God has been using events like Overflow in this generation to counteract that temptation and as a result many young people are finding Christ! Praise the Lord!
Prayer: Pray that God will help youth/ youth leaders from all denominations to come together at Overflow event in one accord to worship God and bring others to Him. Pray that God will continue to use Overflow to bring unity to the Body of Christ (the Christian church) in Ontario!
33. The Word: Matthew 9:27-30; John 9:1-39
Believe it: On many occasions throughout His ministry on earth, Jesus restored sight to the blind. In these two passages Jesus healed men who believed in His healing power. Jesus also points out an eternal truth in the miracles he performed, "Then Jesus told them, I have come into the world to give sight to those who are spiritually blind and to show those who think they see that they are blind"(John 9:39)
Prayer: As we reflect on the scripture today let our prayers be twofold as we pray for those coming to Overflow with physical illnesses ... may their faith in Jesus healing power bring them a miracle of healing! As well let our prayers be focused on those with spiritual blindness - pray that God will remove the scales from their spiritual eyes and Jesus glory will be unveiled in their lives.
34. The Word: Genesis 15: 1-5
Believe it: When we read of Abram's mistakes, we are reminded that he was very mortal, yet he believed and trusted in God. It was Abram's faith and belief in what God told him (v.6) that pegged him Ôrighteous.' A right relationship is based on faith Ð the belief that God is who he says he is and does what he says he will do. Go outside beneath the nighttime sky and look up into the heavens and count the stars if you can ... God's blessings to those who believe will be like that ... too many to count!
Prayer: Pray for the various events of the Overflow schedule (concerts, breakout sessions, prayer meetings etc.), and as we pray may our faith in God's outpoured blessings be such that ÔGod will consider us righteous on account of our faith.' Remember the speakers, guests, and bands that will be ministering. Pray for them as well.
35. The Word: Jonah 3:1-10
Believe it: It was God's plan to destroy the wicked city of Nineveh because of the sinfulness of the people, but when they heard the message of God sent by Jonah they believed him and declared a fast; ... Because they believed, God changed His mind and didn't carry out the plan of destruction.
Prayer: There are many youth in this Nineveh (St. John's) who are on a path of destruction ... some of whom may attend Overflow... others may be taking part in the Ôdowntown' scene ... Let's pray in earnest for their souls, let's pray that they will turn from their path of destruction to Jesus! Let's pray that God will send His angels (it could be you) to minister to them!!! Lord equip us!
36. The Word: Hebrews 12: 1-4
Believe it: Sometimes even when we're nearing the goal, there are hurdles doubts, etc. that tempt to slow us down ... the key to overcoming these is "keeping our eyes on Jesus, our leader and instructor."
Prayer: Pray for the Overflow lead team and volunteer team in these days as they work steadily to ensure that the many details of making these events happen are covered. Pray for God's protection from the forces of evil and pray that we will all Ôkeep our eyes on Jesus, our leader and instructor.' Jesus keep us focused!
37. The Word: Matthew 17: 14-20
Believe it: "If you have faith even as small as a tiny mustard seed you could say to this mountain, ÔMove!' and it would go far away. Nothing would be impossible." (v.20). In this passage the father and son were faced with a seemingly impossible situation ... they could find no solution to their problem ... until they found Jesus. Jesus is greater than any problem any of us could ever have. Believe! And watch the mountains in our lives come tumbling down.
Prayer: Pray for those who are coming to Overflow facing impossible mountains (i.e. illness, loneliness, difficult decisions, relationship problems, emotional/mental illness, depression, abuse). Pray that they may have mustard seed size faith in our God, the mountain crusher! May we witness the moving of many Ômountains' this weekend. To God be the Glory!
38. The Word: Matthew 18:21-35, Mark 11:24-26, Matt. 6:12,14
Believe it: This passage reminds us that when we fail to forgive others, we burn the bridge over which we ourselves must cross to be forgiven. In other words, our personal forgiveness is conditional on our willingness to forgive others ... as difficult as that is. The only thing more difficult than forgiving is not forgiving. Forgiving is freeing our spirit from the offender. Lewis Smedes said, "When I forgive I set a prisoner free, and discover that the prisoner is me."
Prayer: There will be many people who will attend Overflow who have been wounded by someone in their lives ... they have been holding on to the pain of that offence for weeks, maybe years. Pray that by experiencing God's amazing grace, they will by His grace find the grace to forgive those who have Ôtrespassed against them,' and know the liberation that comes in forgiving.
39. The Word: Habakkuk 1: 1-5
Believe it: As you read the first few verses of this passage, it will sound strikingly familiar, as if it were the current events on our news lines. Yet God's word to Habakkuk is His word to us today as we experience Overflow in southwestern Ontario: "The Lord replied, ÔLook, and be amazed! You will be astounded at what I am about to do! For I am going to do something in your own lifetime that you will have to see to believe!'" Believe that He is the Famous One!
Prayer: Pray that God is going to use the youth at Overflow to impact this area of Ontario for God's kingdom ... pray that Satan's strongholds will come tumbling down and down and down!! To God be the Glory!!
40. The Word: Isaiah 58: 1-14
Believe it: God is interested in worshipers who worship Him in spirit and in truth. In other words, if the rejoicing and worshiping that we have been enjoying here at Overflow goes no further then the cement walls of the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex, we, like the Isrealites referred to in this Scripture passage, are pious and not genuine. What we have experienced here, we must take to the world out there in very practical expressions of mercy ... if we follow this lead (Isaiah 58: 6-11) we are promised, "the Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy you with all good things..."
Prayer: Reflect with a grateful heart on the mercies God has shown you this weekend and ask for His guidance in your life to share those mercies with others. Blessings on you!!!
